An easy way to tell it's a

An easy way to tell it's a bee not a hoverfly is because of the long antennae (11 or 12 segments). If you look at hoverfly pictures, you'll see theirs are a very different shape.

Correction

It would be even more useful if I get my numbers right. I should have said 12 or 13 antennae segments - 13 for a male and 12 for a female. This applies to almost all bee species.
