found fish

my 11 year old son, Hayden, was fishing on the banks of the Pagan River, in battery Park va. He spotted the remains of this fish, brought it home. We did not think much of it, but no one in the area, including commercial fisherman and Va marine resources biologist have identified this fish. Do you know the species? thanks

Hi Barry, At first glance it

Hi Barry,

At first glance it looks very like a sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), had it been found in Britain this would be the most likely candidate. The Striped Bass (Morone saxatilis) has a head like this also and is found on the Atlantic coast of the USA the whole way from the St Lawrence river to Louisiana.

Unlikely to be Dicentrarchus labrax due to location, its a European species. Striped Bass a possibility but there may be other options to look at on the Atlantic coast of the States.
