Description:

Growing in ancient woodland. Leaves look (and smell) like apple. But the tree looks too tall to be an apple tree?

M. sylvestris?

Crab apple was my first impression when I saw the leaves and twig. And if it smells like an apple, I'd tend to stick with Malus sp. It certainly does look a bit on the substantial side although M. sylvestris can exceed 40ft. How tall is this one? And are there any signs of blossom?

No sign of blossom at that

No sign of blossom at that time. I estimate the size to be 35-40m based on my photo.

location

Could you be specific about location?
I'd like to visit this tree in the autumn to see if I could ID it more accurately?
