Herring gull
Description:

A common bird, but interesting to watch them courting and trying to start a nest on the roof of a houseboat. There are plenty of more natural and more peaceful sites around locally, but they were persistent, despite being shoo-ed off by the human occupant on numerous occasions. The male (I think) seemed to be presenting the female with bits of seaweed and brightly coloured nylon mooring rope.

up-date on herring gulls

This pair eventually nested just a few feet from the site they originally chose. The nest is located inside a small open boat moored right next to the houseboat jetty, so it's impossible to pass without making them edgy, although they are becoming more tolerant of the human activity. Luckily, no-one needs to use the boat at the moment. Just one egg was laid,on or about the 1st/2nd of June. It is being incubated at present.
