Please help identify - Seaside/ riverside plant, smells very strongly of toasted sesame

A number of fleshy stems (separate plant I think)growing along the Camel trail near Padstow, Cornwall. The leaves and stems smell very strongly of sesame - we picked a head and the whole car was filled with the scent. There seemed to be two varieties, both look very similar from above but one had a strong purple hue to its stem and leaf skeleton. No flowers/ buds showing.
1ft tall. 4 sided stem.
