The colour pattern matches (and, as far as I'm aware, is virtually unique to) Othius punctulatus... however, it just doesn't seem quite right. The head isn't elongate enough for my liking, and the legs are dark rather than yellow-brown. How big was it?
The size was about right for O. punctulatus, around 12 mm, but I see what you mean about the leg colour and shape, it doesn't look right. I'm now wondering if this is a Quedius spp?
I forgot to say, it might be a clue that this landed on the top of a compost bin, so was not found on the ground. So a good flyer..
I agree, Quedius sp. looks much more likely. These are an absolute pain to try to id without a specimen, though - that may be about as far as you can get, I'm afraid.
