Brown-tail caterpillars

Observed: 21st April 2013 By: anonymous spotter
Brown-tail caterpillars
Description:

Multiple caterpillar tents appeared attached to the bare bushes on the land side of the dunes at the end of last year. I was curious to see what emerged and so kept returning to the site. These tiny 1cm long dark caterpillars are distinctive with reddish brown hair, two bright circles of orange on the segments behind their head and two rear segments with chestnut hair. They do not look like the pictures in Collins and I do not know if that is because they are immature or a different species. Any feedback would be appreciated.
