Bee? Hover Fly? Bee-Fly?

Observed: 19th April 2013 By: HenHen’s reputation in Invertebrates

Was settled in the sun on the ground at the edge of our hazel coppice & ancient Oak woodland in Exmoor on our river meadow. When it flew away it reminded me of a bee but had the look of a fly but not a bee-fly! Any help appreciated, thank you!

Thank you so much! There are a few willows on the edge of the river near there and later in the season there are a handful of thistles in the meadow.
