Description:

The vast majority of these Chironomids are male. They generally hatch first and wait for the females so that mating and egg laying is completed as soon as possible. The attrition on them is incredible everything seems to gorge on them.Large flocks of Black headed gulls catch them on the wing when it's windy or sit and pick them off as they hatch in calm conditions.Below water the carnage is just as bad from the humble Stickleback to very large Brown trout etc.
