I was so impressed that you could be so exact from a bud until I saw the last of your photos! Amazing colours, though!
In the past I've had qualms about putting up Observations of labelled plants, on the grounds that a) the labels could be wrong, and b) it feels a little like cheating!
But it's not: iSpot is here for us to learn, and to teach/share knowledge.
So a good example of something from a collection/arboretum can be an excellent reference specimen.
As long as the label is correct...!
How to take close-ups with cheap phone and hand-lens:
Field Guides for Budding Botanists:
I just wondered if the colourful buds, which caught me by surprise, were an underappreciated and particularly attractive feature of this tree. I mainly deal with invertebrates and there appears to be at least one small aphid in the upper right image. So the tree will probably be revisited, with opportunity keep the equestion of ID under review.
...but when you think that they are followed by blossom - well, you can see the problem!
Have to say, when looking at buds through a hand-lens, there's not much worse that seeing part of it suddenly loom towards you. Even a mere aphid looks like something from a horror movie when you are not expecting it.
