Red Poll

Saw these two small finches feeding on a recently installed thistle/niger seed feeder in my garden. I think they're redpoll, which is quite exciting as I've never seen them in the garden before. Our garden has mature trees in and around, with fields very close by.

Lesser Redpoll was until

Lesser Redpoll was until quite recently considered a sub-species of the Common/Mealy Redpoll C. flammea. It has a browner appearance than Common Redpoll which is also paler and larger. C. cabaret is resident in UK but C. flammea occurs only as a winter visitor and passage migrant.
