I'd wait till you've got a male..

I'd wait till you've got a male, and then take as crisp a photograph as possible on the fringing hairs on the front metatarsus (2nd to last leg segment).

(or better still look with a x10 lens)

Fringe of long hairs perpendicular to the segment equals m.mengei.

Just sparse oblique spines equals m.segmentata.

Only works for the males, illustrated well in Roberts. Or poorly by me here:-

The females are harder because you are looking for a very small difference in the epigyne ~ the only photographs that can identify females will probably be down a microscope.

I've known a few people who will attempt id from the abdominal patterning, but my experience is that it varies immensely, and both have a similar look and feel.

Thank you so much for that clarifying info.
Have checked out the photo's and see exactly what you mean. Can't wait to get out 'into the field' again and start looking!- and I shall study them closer in future.
