Description:

Approx. 5 specimens approx. 8mm long found about 10cm underground in patch of glutinous bubbles, rather like Froghopper spit but more glutinous.

Red-and-Black Froghopper (Cercopis vulnerata)

OK, thank you, Joe Botting.
That identification fits well - there are lots of these Froghoppers around here in summer. 'Gendarmes' as they are known locally, as I am in the NW of France.

Thank you also to the person who responded with the 'Planthopper' ident. Sorry, can't find my way around iSpot to find your name.

Apart from anything else I guess the number/position of legs should have told me that it wasn't a Slater :-( !
