Second summer

The term juvenile is a little misleading, as this is a bird in its 3rd calendar year (an early second-summer bird). Admittedly, such terminology is used differently by different people, but juvenile is usually reserved for the first plumage after fledging. Herring Gulls have 4 age groups...1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year and adult. Juvenile would be part of the 1st year age group, together with first winter and first summer.

Simplistic

Yep, sorry Ian I used the term as in "not an adult" which was rather simplistic in hindsight.
