Description:

This is the male of a pair nesting on a small lake. Took me ages to find the female sitting tight in undergrowth on a small tree covered island; just about textbook.

Ring

He came out to say hello, it was only as he was about to return to the water I realised he had a ring. The number definitely starts 5220, after that I’m not sure – possibly 08 or 68. Not sure how many numbers it should have which doesn’t help. Ian?

Next time I’m there I’ll take some feed and make sure I get a good photo.

5220089

Managed to get the full ring number in the end: 5220089. I have reported it and will update this observation with any feedback I get.

Recovery Report

The info from the BTO has come through:
The bird was ringed at Wimbledon Park on 24th June 2001 and was at least one year old at the time. 12 years later he (I know he’s a he from observation though the ringer didn’t sex the bird) has travelled the vast distance of 8Km.
