Common

Aside from the differences in plumage, gulls on rocky coasts, like these, are almost certainly going to be Herring gulls. Common Gulls nest communally beside inland waters like Scottish lochs. Obviously, Common Gulls do visit rocky coasts, but always assume Herring Gull first, and then rule that out before looking at Common Gull.

Re: Common

That's great to know - many thanks indeed Ian. It was my perception of a lack of red spot that directed me towards Common but I obviously wasn't looking hard enough (or had a good enough zoom camera and enough experience to know which species it was most likely to be).
