It could be - but the cones are usually described as pointing back along the stem.

Thanks Rachy. I'll go and have another look at the tree with Poland & Clement's Vegetative Key and see what I can come up with.
I had another look at this tree and the cones are indeed pointing back along the stem towards the trunk of the tree.
Before I go with Lodgepole (I'll wait for my newly-bought tree books to arrive first), is there any other similar species that this could be?
