If you were to give us a brief description of the birds which included the diagnostic features (not hard to do with a Mandarin ... LOL) we may be able to agree the identification.
Also maybe think about a word or two about the courtship display you mentioned, for those who may not be familiar with it. The way the male dips his bill in the water is really quite endearing to me.

male - cream/white cheeks; orange striated neck; stripes below neck; orange body; stripey pointed tale;
female - very plain basically buff-grey mottled with creamy cheeks;
m pursuing f from pond to tree and through large branches; head-dipping within tree; she flew off and he followed.......
