Kingfisher or Kookaburra?

Observed: 22nd April 2010 By: BD
Description:

Thrush sized, in tree across residential road, outskirts of Ripon, N. Yorks. Silhouetted, immediate thought = kookaburra! (Not impossible as Thorpe Perrow might have lost one, they're only 10 miles away.) Found book, bird still there, best match = Pied Kingfisher. OK, R. Ure only half mile away, but P.K. listed as RARE and lives Med. coast of Turkey, so why here?
Any other sightings to prove I'm not seeing things? No photo alas - BD

Have you checked the various

Have you checked the various rare bird websites, there are quite a few but some are payfor only. I don't know which ones are most suitable but a search 'bird sightings' found loads including:
http://www.birdforum.net/forumdisplay.php?f=627
which might be of use.

Birdguides

Birdguides http://www.birdguides.com/home/default.asp will let you browse through recent sightings, although you'd need to pay to get access to all the information, but you can usually get a good idea of what's been sighted in some areas without having to join it.
