I saw this on the side of a beach hut in Budleigh Salterton the lump on top seemed to have "eyes" inside looking around.
No interactions present.
Crickets have very long antennae whereas Grasshoppers have shorter and much stouter antennae. The speckles are quite prominent on the legs in particular. It looks in good order by the way.

what has predated it
I don't think anything has predated it, the lump is it's wing cases.
