This is a species I havent encountered yet personally but quite a few other sea anglers who use the Sea Angling Ireland forum have posted pics from not too far away from where I am. From this view I would struggle to tell this from a whiting, but the front dorsal appears too long(although its collapsed) and the head a bit blunt for a whiting? Not being familiar with the above species, a profile pic would make things a lot easier for me!
Do you meet the poor cod in rockpools or in shallow sandy areas?
The 2nd pic shows the lower jaw barbel, & (accrdg to Collins' complete guide to Brit. coastal wildlife) Whiting has at most a tiny one. Also can see its distinctly snub nose, (whiting quite sharp & with recessed lower jaw)
That is quite a long barbel Chris, thanks for 2nd image. A good feature to seperate by.
