Description:

small bird, feeding on path, large wood near-by - house approx 10 m away. hopping - no sound.

Chiifchaff

Thanks - never seen chiffchaff on the ground, no sound - and that yellow edging to the wing distracted me....but if the consensus is chiffchaff - I cannot disagree!

Chiff

All the features of Chiffchaff are in your picture...very short primary projection beyond the tertials; dark legs; dullish underparts; dark cheeks with pale eye ring...etc.

Willow Warbler would be far brighter overall, longer-winged, with whiter underparts compared to this bird. The early date also suggests Chiffchaff, though Willow won't be far away, now (unless they have read the weather forecast, of course).
