Lion Shield 1
Lion Shiled 2
Description:

This fungi was found growing amongst mixed mainly deciduous trees including oak, sycamore and hazel. Amethyst Deceiver were growing close by but these were spread out over quite a wide area wheras the possible Lion Shield was very localised in one small area and appeared to be associated with well rotted branches.

Identifications

I am certain that this is not

I am certain that this is not Pluteus leoninus and the remains of a veil on stem excludes Pluteus altogether.

Hypholoma

Thanks D.M.H. I arrived at Pluteus leoninus by a process of elimination and the second to last that I eliminated was Sphagnum Brownie which seemed closest in its overall jizz to my photos. Because of the cap size and stem colour I did not go for it but I did not notice the dark spores caught in the ring remains - that is a good learning point for me. Looking at the photos in Sterry and Hughes, the other Hypholoma do not seem as close to my photos as Sphagnum Brownie. Do you think that this would be the most likely Hypholoma or are there others which look similar at certain stages?

I think there are over 30

I think there are over 30 species in this genus found in the UK and I dont have info on them all. TBH my ID was only an educated guess and expect examination of spores would be required to even be certain of genus :-)
