I expect you're correct with the ID Les, but it would be useful to know the size so we can rule out the smaller Bibio species.

They were around 10-12mm, These were in our garden and we saw a group of around 20 or so, the same size on Lochinver breakwater yesterday. added a second photograph of one of them
