Great photograph! This is, just possibly, my favourite bird. I spent so much time listening to, and mapping, them at a site I used to manage many years ago. They make an amazing array of calls, grunts, squeals and indescribable noises - and they look as if they have been pressed flat in a vice – they can squeeze between tiny gaps in the reeds – I still remember my excitement at finding my first black fluff-balls that are baby water rail – they were being called across an open ditch by the parents. I really like water rails.
This is my first time to be able to capture a water rail in film. When it was motionless, I didn't realise it was there all the time behind the thickets. Most of the time, saw them in the flash. Very shy and elusive bird.
