Caterpiller-like grubs

Description:

They have white bodies with brown heads. The largest are about 40mm long & 5mm dia., there are smaller (younger?) ones too.
They were in the compost of a pot of Ranunculus Aconitifolius & have eaten all the roots, which I'm not too happy about!
Today I found some much smaller ones (10mm) in pots of Astrantia Major. Fortunately I found these before they did any damage.
