This does not look like C. nudiflorus as I know it. The colour and veining are wrong. It might key out to C. longiflorus but I am not at all sure it is that.
... for it being Crocus nudiflorus, what with it being autumn flowering (but late for that species?) and flowering without leaves, but since you questioned it I keyed it out in Stace, and ended up with Crocus longiflorus.
Many thanks to everyone for your identifications and comments. It's surprising that the plant turned out to be, most likely, C. longiflorus, which my guide tells me is a native of S.W. Italy, Sicily and Malta. I assume that it is an opportunistic escapee rather than one that has been naturalised. Now if only I could remember at what point on the path I took that photograph!
