to be honest I think location is the best way to get to sub-species ID on these anyway. There's plenty of lowland in the way so mixing between the different UK subspecies is relatively unlikely.
I would agree - mountain hares in Scotland would be scoticus and those in Ireland/NI would be hibernicus, but what about the ones introduced to the Peak District and Isle of Man? I'm assuming that these were originally from Scottish stock, but how long might it be before they've been geographically separated for long enough to become another sub-species? I believe the Peak District ones were released there in about 1880.
