Found in compost heap 1st March 2013 head markings
Description:

This was found when a compost heap was dug out today. Can anyone identify it please? It was put back in another area of the heap that was not going to be disturbed so it could continue to hibernate safely.

I think that one's a Queen

If I understand their life-cycle correctly, the one you’ve found is a ‘queen’ and if it survives hibernation it will start a new colony in spring. They’ll help keep the pests down in your garden but you might want to be careful if you’re going to pick them up because they do have a sting which I’m told some people can have an allergy to.
