Description:

Have seen these flies around a permanently damp area by a leaking water pipe, the ground around the area is very mossy and there may be several of these flies around during the summer months. Someone has suggested a type of Stilt-legged Fly, but does anyone have a Genus at least?

That was my first thought, too, but I have only seen it on seepages on coastal chalk cliffs, so was not sure about the habitat!

Compare to my earlier posting...

Thanks very much - I have revised it, hope that is right - it is possible the species has adapted to living in an urban environment. Certainly a colourful insect though

Revision

The usual thing is just to agree with the suggested ID, rather than add it again, but don't worry.

Nice flies, aren't they...quite strikingly large and well marked.
