I am more than happy to agree the Latin name but I have always known it simply as "heron". When did it become Grey heron, and what others are there in the UK? (I am quite old and have not always kept up to date)
I know what you mean! I myself normally simply refer to them as Herons as well, but the proper name (as per the RSPB, BTO and other references) is the Grey Heron. This is the only regularly occurring species in the UK, admittedly, but we do have other occasional visitors: Green Heron, Squacco Heron, Great Blue Heron and Purple Heron.
Thank you John.
I have hand annotated my medieval reference book with the change, and will look out for these illegal immigrants.
