My first thought was a shag but I am not confident about shag versus not fully mature cormorant. You would have a better idea than me for sure. With no head to tell us anything I wasnt sure it could be IDed. The ring number should result in an ID and will probably prove you right. Cheers.
Do you mean the shortness of the tail as compared to a cormorant? If it is a juvenile bird can the shortness of the tail be reliably used to differentiate? I know its all of little consequence anyway as the ID of the bird will be revealed by BTO.
As you say, waiting for the ringing details is the best idea...just guessing otherwise. I doubt there is much difference in feather length between an adult and a juvenile at this time of year, but I don't have figures for that.
If you look at the ring numbers for Shag here...
...it would suggest that Shag is the species.

Hopefully its just a simple case of submitting the number online? Must have a go. I was just wondering about the tail length thing as I took tail feathers off of that dead cormorant I found a fortnight back and they measure 7.5". Can't tell exactly where the quill starts on these ones above here but the ruler is reading them at 5.5" or there abouts. I should have pulled a quill or 2 from the tail today for comparison with these but I was more than pleased with the ring and thats all I salvaged. Thanks.
Yes, just enter the details here...
I have it done and all and got my email response. Hopefully it isnt a long wait. That made finding those remains all the more interesting. I went out today in the hope of finding dead stuff on the shore- didnt have much luck until I found those at first disappointing looking reamins.
Do shags have paler feet I wonder? Those cormorant feet a couple of weeks back were quite black. The feet on todays one were paler than Ive seen before on shoreline remains. Must do a bit more exploring tomorrow because the recent stormy weather should have resulted in marine bird casualties.
