Excellent photos - can I ask what camera / lens you were using as I am thinking of getting a new camera?
Hi, Thanks for your comments. The birds were quite close and the light was excellent. The photos were taken at max optical zoom (30x) and cropped
The camera was a Sony DSC-HX100v (now superceded by the DSCHX200v and HX300 due to be released in March)bridge camera. It is about the size of a small SLR with a built-in zoom lens and has HD video capability.
Portability and value for money was important when choosing this camera and I have been delighted by its ease of use and performance.
This versatility does compromise the quality of photos in poor light, with "noise" becoming apparent. At the low end of the zoom close focus is excellent for flowers but at 30x usually for dragonflies & butterflies you need to be a lot further away to allow sharp focus.
I hope this helps
Thank you - very helpful! I currently have a sony DSC-H5 which I have had for a long time now and like a lot but would just like a bit more zoom. Your info has encouraged me to stick with the sony range and perhaps I will wait and look at the HX 300 before making any decisions.
