It was only when I blew the first photo up that I noticed the tangle of birds at the head of the line. How did they manage to stay aloft?.

I think it's an illusion

I assume you mean that they look like they're too close together?
I think that they're close, true, but not as close as they look - they're just lined up with the camera. I've had a couple of shots like this that make you think, "How do they all fit in that small space?"
