not Velleius

Sorry to disagree Parry, but I'm sure this isn't Velleius. There are lots of staphylinids that are roughly this sort of shape, but Velleius is very large, broader in outline and has serrated antennae.

This pic doesn't show it particularly well but there is a reddish coloured segment- in Chinery on p 261 there's one called Staphylinus caesareus that looks pretty close?

It is close in the sense that S. caesareus is in tribe Staphylinini, but caesareus is broader in shape and has more vivid red, plus you can usually see something of the yellow hairs on the head and thorax. So I don't think it can be that. There are a lot of species that look roughly like this one!
