new photo with tail added
Hi Andrea, unfortunately the new photo isn't particularly conclusive but you might remember what you saw. The colouring suggests Bank Vole to me but if that's the case, the tail should have been about half the length of the vole's body. It would have been proportionally shorter if it was a Field Vole.
I agree that we still can't decide from this extra photo, because the angle of the vole throws the perspective.
However, if you can accurately recall whether the tail was more or less than 1/3 of the body length, it's absolutely fine to state that in your notes as a diagnostic feature. If you're not sure though, I think we should stick with vole species though I agree the coat colour is more likely bank.

I agree entirely that there is still some doubt and I'm certainly no expert but on the basis that the initial 'Bank Vole' ID has been entered as "It's likely to be this, but I can't be certain", rather than "I'm as sure as I can be", I'm still happy to give it my agreement.
thanks for comments. unfortunately i didn't notice the tail length at the time! i was told it was a bank vole by another observer at the time so hopefully they knew their voles.
