Mottled Grey

Don't see them often - that's my excuse anyway.

Hi David, its one I see quite a lot of in the early part of the year, the markings+shape are pretty distinctive.

Mottled grey

Thank you - looking at other photos on Ispot and UKmoths it does indeed look much more like a mottled grey than a pale brindled beauty, which was the nearest I could guess from a very inadequate book! It was definitely brown rather than grey and rather lighter than it appears in the photo. Very like the one posted by David on 25th March 2012.

Hi Marion, It is quite brown

Hi Marion,

It is quite brown looking, sometimes light can play tricks and do such things but in this case I think it actually is just a brown Mottled Grey. A very fresh well marked Mottled Grey is a stunning if sombre coloured moth- they can be quite silky looking with a lovely pattern.
