Description:

Brightly shining on a rough heath, in December. Near the base of an old birch tree.

Identifications

Caution: Do NOT use iSpot to identify fungi to eat!

Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.

Fungus

Looks like an earth-ball (Lycoperdon or similar) that has long since opened and discharged the spores. If they become very dry - and this may have "freeze-dried" - they are very tough and persistent.
