0154 Grus grus (Linnaeus) (Crane) - Hickling, East Norfolk (VC 27), 1st February 2013

The tips of the primaries seem very worn. Does this allow anything to be said about the age of the bird?

A quick search suggests that Cranes moult fully every two years, prior to migration; in which case, a mature bird due to moult again this autumn would be pretty worn by now.

However, I have no real knowledge of Crane moult and suspect it could be more complicated than that! Looking at this bird, it seems to have a similar chunk out of each primary feather, which could relate to a problem when they were growing.
