Found lying beside a waterbut in my garden. I don't recognise this bird, can anyone help? Length 23cm from head to tail.
No interactions present.
The size is about right for a Fieldfare (the lower end of the size scale) and the buff throat / upper breast giving way to a whitish breast with open arrow head shaped black markings make me think it's this species of large thrush.

Thank you. This all makes sense - never seen one this close up before. It looks like a young bird to me, any comments? I'll dispose of it now. Thanks again.
The only way you could age the bird from that angle is the shape of the tail feather tips. Birds born last year have slightly narrower, more pointed tips to the feathers than adult birds. Looking at these, it might be an adult, I think. A view of the greater coverts on the wing would help, as young birds might retain a few juvenile feathers; but otherwise, they look identical.

Thank you Ian, really interesting. This is my first time on the site and I should have had more faith because I read your comments after I'd disposed of the corpse! If this is an example of how helpful people are, then I'll certainly be using ispot again and next time I'll keep the evidence for longer... I only wish I had the expertise to enable me to help others.
You'll find iSpot is a very friendly and knowledgeable place, Alison...and I'm sure you will find that there will be times when you can help others. Lots of people on here started from a low knowledge base, but are now making lots of identifications and helping others. It's a great site!
