Tephritidae

Personally, I'd like a photo from above, to be sure.

Many thanks, Chris. A previous posting of a mating pair was identified by Ophrys as Urophora stylata. This second pair was on a neighbouring group of thistles, and I assumed (probably too readily) that they were the same species. The first pair, seen from above, were brown on the thorax, with a small yellow area immediately behind. This pair, from sideways on at least, certainly appear more yellow generally.

ID comment

Hi Rod, I'm reasonably happy with the ID, that bottom wing seems right to me but as Ophrys points out a shot from above might just seal it. Regards Chris.

Key?

What are you using to key it out? White is the standard key, and Smit's Dutch book has a useful selection of wings and photos, plus a key if you know Dutch.

T. tussilaginis should be on Burdock, which I don't think this is (?). There are several species with similar wing patterns and without a better picture, I would not want to go to species.

I suspect you may be right, but the family are not as easy as they might look!

Many thanks, Chris and Ophrys. Unfortunately, this was the only 'elevation' available. Memo to self for the future - try to photograph from more than one viewpoint if possible.
