A palaeontologist colleague of mine comments:
"It doesn’t look much like a fossil to me. The pattern of what appear to be irregular, thin cracks is one that can happen inorganically, and quite often does in fine-grained rocks like this (but one can’t even be sure it’s a sedimentary rock). The other side of the pebble (of which there are two photos) has some iron staining and a few curved fracture patterns that look a bit like a shell (called conchoidal fracture). Without seeing the specimen in the flesh, so to speak, I can’t be 100% sure it’s not a fossil but I’d be very surprised if it is."

Any idea of what caused it?
The philosophy on iSpot is to ID the organism causing the trace fossil (or nest or egg or mound) - so can we narrow it down to Annelida or Arthropoda (or finer), or is even this beyond us?
