Female Pheasant

A female Pheasant and one of a group of 7 (1m and 6f) that discovered bird food in our back garden during the snow. One of the females shows a very odd behaviour trait which involves running backwards for 3,4 or 5 steps, sometimes doing this 3 or 4 times. It doesn't seem to be a response to anything I can see. I watched a lone male doing this in the woods last February, and assumed it must be limbering up for courtship battles in the spring. But if the females are doing it too..?
