Generally light brown but with a dark green wing panel. Amongst a flock of about 30-40.

many thanks for the correction - none of my bird books illustrate this phase of the young male Pintail, so I would never have found the right ID without your help. It did seem a bit large for a Teal.
I'm not aware of any books that illustrate the 'transitional' phase of all species - there just wouldn't be enough space to illustrate all possible variables!
Most fieldguides just illustrate juvenile and adult plumages, and leave you to try and work out what a bird halfway between the two might look like!
