Possibly some type of Acer? Ornemental gardens so possibly not native, the bark was a stunning red colour and was readily peeling off.

I did wonder about the Prunus, but if I recall correctly that's less shaggy-barked.

Anyway, the Acer griseum at Dyffryn Gardens is noteworthy enough to be mentioned on the Dyffryn Gardens Wikipedia page.
