knotweed

hi hedera,

isn't it either Japanese Knotweed, or Himalayan Balsam, upon which your Crane fly rests?

Tiger Cranefly on Himalayan Knotweed

hi jeremyr,
yes, it's Himalayan Knotweed, new to the garden
after a September visit to Great Dixter and its nursery... I tried looking it up in gardening books, but didn't find it listed. It's in a container, in case it's anything like the two you mention.
As a volunteer, I helped pull up Japanese
Knotweed on Parkland Walk, and hope the new Knotweed isn't that pernicious...

Himalayan Knotweed

yes, the Himalayan one is new to me.

As to the Japanese variety, here in Tottenham parks they blasted the ground where it grew so that nothing at all could germinate, then turfed it over a year later. No sign of it now, except in all the surrounding gardens of course..
