the alternative "hedge sparrow"!
House , Tree sparrow yes ( psseridae) but Dunnock prunelidae Hedge sparrow no.
I've looked closely at this, and though I'm no expert it looks very like a dunnock.
Alandell's reason for disagreeing please?
I was not disagreeing with it being a Dunnock, I was disagreeing with it being called a Hedge sparrow.
The bird was correctly identified by Alladell initially as a Dunnock Prunella modularis, and I agree with Alladell that the use of the name 'Hedge Sparrow' should be discouraged.
Hedge Sparrow is a correct name in that it is a 'common name' for Prunella modularis, the problem is that it suggests that the Dunnock is related to the Tree & House Sparrow (Passeridae) family. Dunnocks are actually in the Accentor family, Prunnellidae, so a better alternative name is Hedge Accentor.
for misunderstanding the comment.
I did briefly think at the time "should I add that I know it's not really a sparrow at all?"
I'll know better next time!
