The misidentification of Eriothrix rufomaculata for Gonia divisa is one of the classic examples of a misident propagating through the internet.
I think the original problem starts with "Chinery" (Insects of Britain and Northern Europe) where there is a poor picture of Gonia (a fly with red patches on the sides) and none of Eriothrix. Someone has tagged a photo of Eriothrix as Gonia on this basis and the mistake is repeated as people briefly glance at photos or copy the first ID they see in Google without a critical look at the pictures. I've given up trying to correct websites where Eriothrix is named as Gonia - just too many now.

Many thanks, Chris and Matt. I'll post a different shot for confirmation. I hope someone may be able to identify the species I mistakenly took to be Mesembrina meridiana.
