Description:

Orange structure forming gall on Rosa canina. As far as I know, the only gall of this type on Rosa canina, although the taxonomy is under review, so this may change.

Identifications

Caution: Do NOT use iSpot to identify fungi to eat!

Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.

Rust on rose

There is another rust on rose P. confusum which can only be separated by microscopic examination. I believe that P. mucronatum proves to be much commoner when such tests are done, and certainly was in our case. The literature is poor on separating these at the aecial stage, but there is a paper from New Zealand with some useful pointers (sorry not immediately to hand).
