Description:

Alternate buds, pointed, curving away from the twig (unlike Beech, which are very straight, slim and pointed).
Substantial spreading tree, one of a group: some leaves retained on lower branches through the winter even though they are dead: both Beech and Hornbeam do this, and it conveniently allows us to check the leaf margin: toothed = Hornbeam, entire=Beech.
